Seriously though Comrade.... that site is Brilliant!
It really gives an idea of how many and varied the Russian transport systems were.

I love the detailed drawings.
Its the first site I have seeen which is so comprehensive.

There will be a lot of feedback on this site I am certain.
We have needed something like this on the forum as a reference and inspiration for a while now....

Nice one Laughing

Trudie says I can have a truck as long as she's allowed to drive it, but I can imagine going without all sorts of necessitys (like holidays Confused ) to maintain one. Nice website though, it looks a bit like a shopping list.

Ace ! Where do you find women of that calibre ? !

Maybe some of us enthusiasts could help you play (sorry, maintain) it.
Nick and Walter would be converts straight away and I have a tool kit to lend (and can make tea). Wink

I was quite taken by the German motorbikes but have no idea if the Soviets used anything like it ? Rolling Eyes

Barry was talking about building what effectively is a "kit car" armoured car ; ie a replica ,on a donor chassis.

So there is lots of support in the ranks. Laughing

I know someone with a set of plans to build a BA-64 using an LWB Landrover as its basis. Could be interesting.

We haven't discounted the eventual acquisition of a truck, but we need to know much more about it. Personally, I would prefer a Russian or British truck, but I understand the US trucks are easier to obtain and spares are cheaper & easier to come by. The dream lives on. Smile

Oh yes - they 'borrowed' the design of the pre-war BMW motorcycles and truned them out in large numbers throughout (and after) the war! Also, most of the motorcycle outfits used by the Fash are actually slightly post-war Russian made Ural motorcycles (or even the Chinese Chiang-Jeng copies!) They just pay a small fortune to have them made to look like a German BMW - so it must be cheaper to just get it painted green and marked up as Guards! Would love to get one myself sometime... Sad

This is spooky, I've just taken out a subscription 4 Classic Military Vehicle; it's as though I've lost control. Trouble is Trudie's not stopping me. What should I do?

I'm sure Phil, one of the new bods from up north, said to me he has a GMC truck part restored for sale for only a few hundred quid.
I must quiz him more on this if he is at the Victory show.

If you want a runner though with little work to do on it then it's three or four grand to spend.

But look at all the fun the 514th have with their trucks.it must be worth it.

In fact why not ask Mick at 514th if he knows of any trucks for sale.he must have a few contacts by now.

Yeah I've been given that sort of price for a spruced up runner, thats what we're looking for, something to re-spray our favourite shade of green (olive drab, I believe), find some appropriate markings and finish with that big red star. Mmmmmmmmm! Very Happy

By the way Bob, thanx for the offer of help, the situation will evolve, but as I've said we need to look into it properly, finance, running costs, time to attend events that may off-set it's running costs, maintenance (I'm not the most practical man), spares etc. If the bloke who owns the 'car-park' behind our house says no; even somewhere to keep it may be a problem. I do have other options. I'll keep everyone posted. Confused

Is it accurate, commen for wartime soviet vehicles to have big red stars on them? Its often hard to tell from photos etc but I thought the rkka didnt go in for nice shiny aiming points.

Not that common to see them with red stars on. In fact if its an American truck, likely as not it would have had a white star on it - even in Soviet use.

One of the books mentions this (think it was Rising '44 actually) and the story from the Soviet troops was that these trucks were made by Soviet industry for the Americans, hence the markings, but in the end these particular ones never got exported to them Wink

And the other tale that I read somewhere was that the Soviet peoples saw so many trucks with 'USA' on them, that they thought it was an acronym for the Russian for "Kill That Son-of-a-bitch Adolf"!!

I also remember that the Red star wasn't too popular until towards the end of the war, when soldiers wanted to seem to be patriotic - although I have quite a few books on Soviet tanks and other vehicles, and the red star seems to be more common than is often thought. Even seen a Matilda tank with stars on it!
